Upon arriving in Haines, Alaska, I searched out a local information booth. I asked for a hiking map. My sister piped in, “What is the hardest and longest trail?” The man raised his eyebrows and asked if I was a hiker. Tiffany and I laughed. Tiffany and our mom chose an easier route floating down a river while I set out to climb Mount Riley.
I found this interesting marker.
Summited Mount Riley
As I had hoped, the view was spectacular.
On the trail back, I saved a juvenile Varied Thrush and took it to the Eagle Sanctuary.
I saw a local and asked directions and she was very pleased to see what I was doing and said I had restored her faith in humanity. Unfortunately, the Sanctuary called me the next day and let me know the Thrush had a broken leg and did not survive the night.
I asked if it was at least used to feed the Eagles, but the lady said they cannot feedwild animals to the Eagles in the sanctuary in case they have any disease or parasites which are likely what it died from.
It was a good day of Alaska beauty, exercise, and philanthropy.
