Kayaking for Change

When you read a byline like “World adventurer and educator circumnavigating Oz for education” in a kayak solo no less, one can’t help but be curious about the woman behind the headline. So we tracked down Teresa Diehl to find out more about her inspiring kayaking adventure. Kayaking for Change Thank you to TRAVEL PLAY LIVE, Australia’s number one women’s adventure and travel magazine, article by Amy Heague, Chief Editor and Creative Director, for bringing attention to my efforts to empower students in goal setting, life skills, community awareness, and personal achievement.

Day of the Dead Paddle

Day of the Dead Paddle. I am the party-pooper with no face paint. Rebeca is two from my left and was in character from late morning on. She just CREEPED ME OUT!

Miami Expedition Training for Cuba to Key West, and Working with Students

Arriving in Miami in August during a threat of a hurricane, I began the arduous task of getting permission from the United States Government to legally travel by boat to Cuba. I had hoped that if I were poised and ready to go, perhaps the US government would speed up its decision. It was a good plan, but of course it did not go that way…

WILDERNESS WEAR IN ACTION

It is getting a bit cool in the mornings and the best solution for me is to don my WildernessWear Light Merino 170 Long Sleeve Crew Top under my paddling top. It is 100% Merino Wool, 200% Australian, and feels great next to my skin as a base layer. It is moisture wicking and after washing is always the first garment to dry in my gear. LIGHT MERINO 170 LONG SLEEVE CREW TOP Here is a photo of me with my Merino Wool top, just before the sun came up and my amazing Dolphin encounter. Great footage of Cavorting Dolphins I captured on a morning paddle. Just about to set out on a paddle in the beautiful Key Largo, Florida sporting my Merino top. WildernessWear is the perfect tool for the job! Thanks again to Jon and the crew at WildernessWear. Their efforts and customer service are outstanding!

FLORIDA BAY OUTFITTERS

Thank you to Florida Bay Outfitters (FBO) for being my Expedition Headquarters. Cuba to USA  for Education would not be possible without the generous support of FBO. They have received all my gear for the expedition, given me a place to stay through all the red tape and organization of the journey, as well as assisting with the scheduling of speaking engagements. Frank and Monica have been of tremendous help. Florida Bay Outfitters sells everything Kayak, and Stand Up Paddle Boarding gear and supplies. They rent equipment for all your paddling needs and provide tours, training, and SUP Yoga classes. FBO is right on the Black Water Sound so you can launch right from the well equipped store or they also deliver kayaks for use throughout the Florida Keys. Frank, Monica, and the staff are courteous, friendly, professional, and knowledgable. Frank has been in the kayaking business for well over 25 years and there is not much he does not know about kayaking and the area. Monica worked for the Florida State Park Service so she knows all about the wildlife and great places to paddle for the day or camp overnight. For all your Florida Keys paddling needs, look no further than Florida Bay Outfitters! PADDLED 28 MILES TODAY

Submitted by Teresa on 17 September 2015 – 3:33pm It was a glorious morning on the Caloosahatchee River in Florida. Almost made it to the Gulf (as opposed to the Ocean. The Gulf is NOT the Ocean and I have been put in my place several times for making that mistake :)  ). The last five miles were in torrential downpour with 30 knot winds causing a following sea to make my kayak nice and squirrely (Would the Aussie equivalent be Kangarooy? I am sure that is not right. Don’t be shy Aussies, go ahead and chime in). I ducked behind an overpass foundation piling and made my way to the leeward side of the banks to let the storm pass. Tomorrow I head to Chicago for a memorial service to my Great Aunt Goldia. She was the oldest of eight children and sister to my Grandfather, for whom the Circumnavigation of Oz is dedicated. Perhaps I will dedicate the Cuba to USA for Education to my lovely and wonderful Aunt Goldia. I am looking forward to seeing all my relatives who I have not seen for at least thirteen years! Will keep training and keep posting from Chicago. Cheers, Mates! Teresa

Escape from Security

Submitted by Teresa Diehl on 15 September 2015 – 10:43am “Ma’am, would you like the privacy of a room, or would you like me to check you here?”  You’re not getting me into any room, Babe, I thought to myself, but I politely said, “Check me here, I don’t have time to waste.” Honest to Pete, she felt me up, looked me straight in the eye and said, “Sometimes it’s just the way you stand or the crease in your jeans,” and smiled. It was the only smile I got throughout all of TSA (Totally Stupid …Okay I’ll keep it family friendly.) I shook my head and walked away. What a way to get your jollies. No wonder that guard was so pissed off about being demoted! I am SO flying out of Oakland FROM NOW ON! I redressed, headed to my boarding gate, and just laughed. See, no hard feelings, I have got a Straight to paddle!

Security Trouble

Submitted by Teresa on 13 September 2015 – 3:18pm   I kid you not! My jaw absolutely dropped! The male guard turned his monitor around to show me and the female guard approached. I was so mad, I almost pulled my pants down right there. How are they going to check this?      The only thing metal on me was my pants button and my watch. Neither showed up on the scan, but a big yellow spot showed up on my crotch and slightly down my left leg! It looked like I peed on myself! I would have fallen down laughing at the picture if the situation wasn’t so serious. How were they going to check this? What on earth set it off?

Airport Security on way to Florida

Submitted by Teresa Diehl on 11 September 2015 – 7:51am On to security. What a goat rope, literally. It was like Disneyland, back and forth through the ropes, but NOBODY smiled. I asked if we had to take our shoes off. The guard tersely said,  “Yes.” “We don’t have to take our shoes off in Australia,” I replied smiling. He looked at me and said nothing. “You don’t care, do you?” “Nope,” he said as blandly as he possibly could. I couldn’t help it. I burst out laughing. That guy takes his job way too seriously. He was probably demoted to Check Boarding Pass and Passenger ID from monitoring the scanner and playing with the gadgets…and did they have gadgets galore! Problem was they were broken! My 10 inch by 3 inch diameter stainless steel thermos of coffee made it though, but my body scan showed I had something in my crotch.

SAN FRANCISCO TO MIAMI-THE ADVENTURE BEGINS!

Submitted by Teresa Diehl on 29 August 2015 – 2:42pm My Mom and I were talking as I was checking-in online when, Whoops! We just passed the airport.  Were we early, ha, ha, ha, NOT! Well, no use panicking when getting lost in San Francisco and late for a flight. I whipped out my handy, dandy Waze on the mobile phone and presto, fixo, we are zig-zagging our way back toSan Francisco International Airport.  All the lights were red. No worries, more visiting time with my favourite Mom!  We really did get to go the back way to SFO.  We arrived twenty minutes prior to boarding. Plenty of time, well sort of.   I grabbed my bags and searched for Check In.  EVERYTHING was automated and there was no arguing that I had already paid for my checked bag. Even if there were someone there, I did not have time.  However, there was someone to ask me to please take my one and a half pounds out of my checked bag! Really? One and a half pounds, really? Two-thirds of a kilo, seriously? I took two bags of my sister’s absolutely awesome home-made beef jerky. No doubt I am making it across the Florida Straight with that fuel in me!  She is so clever, she sealed it all up and made her own label-Paddler’s Pick, of course.  She even included the Nutrition Facts to make sure there was no problem arriving in Florida. It even has a bar code, pretty slick, eh? Notice the cut out for hanging it on the rack display.  I’ll tell you what, I am glad she’s with me and not against me! Check it out! My sister is the BEST in the whole wide world! Two-thirds of a kilo, COME ON!! Alright, get over it. On to security…
