Australian Sea Lion Encounter

This is why I sea kayak.  We had a wonderful opportunity by Seal Island just off the coast of Rockingham, Western Australia.  My paddling partner and I came upon about twenty Australian Sea Lions basking in the sun.  As we sat offshore the island, two Sea Lions entered the water and came right up to us.  They frolicked and put on a display for about 15-20 minutes.  The marine mammals dove under our kayaks and nibbled at our paddles.  Suddenly, they would burst out of the water and slap their flippers.  Deliberately approaching us, they would make eye contact and then perform some display.  The pinnipeds would resurface and almost give us a wink as if they were checking our response to their antics.  They chased each other and wrestled in the water.  Clearly having a good time performing for us, their cheeky personalities came through in each of their distinctive dances.  The video is available under Recent Uploads on my YouTube Channel: http://www.youtube.com/channel/UCmUr_7XECBPT4U6fv4Eiv_Q

Pay It Forward

Ah, yes, the joys of transition and change, challenges and new endeavours.  I just needed to scan a document to my computer.  Pretty straight forward, right?  Well, yes, if you have a flashcard or thumb drive.  I’m at the Murdoch University Library with no thumb drive and no knowledge of how to operate the scanner and of course I had to have the scan NOW.  I humbly approach another student and he is kind enough to lend me his thumb drive.  As I fumble around the scanner, a kind soul sees my plight and assists me with the process and I actually get the scan accomplished! Tonight, I needed to pick up a few groceries.  A few groceries grew into an amount that was too much to carry on my bike.  Combine this with a clear obviousness that I didn’t know exactly where I was, and you get a pretty pathetic sight.  Enter kind gentleman without a bike rack, but a willingness to drive me and my groceries home and return me to my bike. These gracious gestures made my life so much better.  How often are we so busy we pass the person on the side of the road with their hood up?  Or we hurry by the lady struggling with a big package.  It really only takes a few moments to make a big difference for someone.  I didn’t even get these generous people’s names, but rest assured I will be repaying their kindnesses many times forward!
